Be Careful What You Wish For

He tapped his finger on the perforated lid of the mayonnaise jar. “I’ll let you out if you grant me a wish.”

The creature in the jar frowned, crossed its arms, and fluttered its wings until they hummed. “What do you want?”

“I want to be lovable.”

The fairy’s chin lifted. “Let me out first.”

When he unscrewed the lid, the fairy blew a puff of glitter into his face and laughed as it flitted away.

He sat back on his haunches, scratched an itch behind his ear with his foot, and then went in search of a tennis ball.
