“Why can’t I play outside, mommy?”
Blue eyes looked up from the book that rested on the girl’s lap, her form curled up on the small sofa. A frown twisted her lips and dulled the curiosity shining in her expression. She knew why. She knew.
Sarah shook her head, gaze fixated on the world outside the window. Hideous creatures roamed and terrorized the people. One clambered up the building opposite theirs.
“Will daddy come home soon?”
Her hand clenched around her husband’s spare rifle. Tears threatened to spill. They would need food soon.
“Will we be ok?”
She didn’t know.
